Which bin? How to dispose of waste properly on campus

Effective waste diversion at Colorado State University starts with the campus community. While it is evident that the CSU community is passionate about recycling, composting, and waste diversion on campus, we need to be proactive on how to dispose materials on campus. Luckily, CSU has put together a recycling guide for easy and proper waste disposal.

Recycling Guidelines

  • CSU has single stream recycling, meaning all recyclables can go into one bin. Paper, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles all go into the recycling bins on campus.
  • As long as it’s not neon or stained with food, recycle all paper.
  • EcoProduct coffee cups, silverware and to-go containers served in the dining halls, LSC and campus coffee shops are NOT RECYCLABLE. These are biodegradable and should be composted when possible. If no composting bin is nearby, please dispose these products in the landfill.
  • Corrugated cardboard, pizza boxes and waxed cardboard CANNOT be placed in the recycling bins. These items must be disposed of in the designated cardboard bins.

Trash Guidelines

  • Plastic bags, wax-lined cups, chip bags, cellophane, straws, disposable cutlery and plates, and most individually wrapped items, (such as candy bars and coffee creamers), must be tossed in the trash bins.
  • All materials stained with food, (including grease and liquids), must be put in the trash bin.

Composting Guidelines

  • Please dispose of all food waste and compostable materials when possible in the brown composting bins. Compostable items include coffee filters, tea bags (staple removed), paper towels, napkins and food scraps (no bones).
  • General composting rule of thumb: “If my waste was intended to be edible or made of paper, compost it!”

Specialty Item Disposal Guidelines

  • Electronic waste, including microwaves and refrigerators, can be taken to Surplus Property to be recycled, resold or donated.
  • For batteries, gel packs, and battery packs, please call 970-491-0113 for a collection container.
  • For empty paint containers please call Environmental Health Services at (970) 491-6746.
  • For items like Styrofoam peanuts, pallets, wood, laser printer cartridges, and fluorescent tubes, please call Facilities Management Integrated Solid Waste at (970) 491-0113.
